Winter concert spreads holiday spirit at Sussex Academy

January 6, 2026

The sounds of the season filled the gymnasium at Sussex Academy’s elementary campus Dec. 12, when students in all grade levels entertained families and classmates with a cheerful winter concert.

Every student worked diligently to learn song and dance routines for a show that got everyone in the holiday spirit, said Connie Hendricks, Sussex Academy elementary dean, who noted the winter concert was a resounding success under the talented direction of performing arts teacher Christopher Decker.

“We saw an amazing turnout of parents and families for both the K-2 and 3-5 performances,” Hendricks said. “Mr. Decker did an incredible job preparing the children, and it was a joy to watch our students truly shine on stage!"

Decker had strong words of praise for his students.

“At every concert, I have the pleasure of seeing months of these students' patience, trust and love unfolding in a few brave moments on the stage,” he said. “I watch children who once whispered now sing out and who once hid in the back of the room now stand tall, all carried by music and courage they didn't know they had.

“In those small moments, I am reminded why the performing arts matter so deeply, and I am overwhelmingly proud to be the teacher entrusted with these voices, hearts, and these steps into believing in themselves,” Decker said. “Being proud of these remarkable students is an understatement.”

Sussex Academy is a tuition-free, public charter school in Georgetown.
