Winter, spring events planned for Dewey Beach

Marketing committee to continue holiday plan discussions
September 20, 2024

Looking to expand upon off-season town events, the Dewey Beach Marketing Committee voted Sept. 10 to recommend commissioners augment the annual tree-lighting ceremony with local entertainers.

Committee members suggested the town could coordinate with Cape Henlopen School District to request that a student choir sing holiday-themed songs at the event set for Saturday, Dec. 7, at the TJ Redefer Memorial Baywalk.

The committee also began initial discussions on working with the Dewey Business Partnership to host a walking parade after the annual spring Egg Scoop.

Businesses could decide whether to distribute treats to participants, who may be invited to don their Easter finery, or their own bunny costume. Further discussions and a possible vote to recommend the event to commissioners will take place at the next meeting, which is not yet scheduled.

The committee tabled discussions on fundraising ideas for the new town hall. Previously, Commissioner Paul Bauer said, town council had voted to approve the marketing committee’s recommendation to have a local artist paint a wall mural that recognizes donors who support a fundraising campaign.

Town Manager Bill Zolper said pavers recognizing donors may be a better idea, as the amount of wall space is limited inside the front lobby, and a historic photo display and timeline are planned for the public meeting space. Pavers would fit well in the green space adjacent to the planned building, he said.

Committee member Patrice Gancie said the Dewey in Bloom group will meet next month to remove summer flowers from the planters throughout town and replace them with winter pansies.

Dewey in Bloom would like to increase the number of planters throughout town, she said, and a planned April fundraiser at Big Fish Grill will earmark a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds for the group.

Chair Alex Csedrik said he received a document from the town climate change committee, which requested help with a public awareness campaign. Csedrik said he would review the document, which includes ideas to engage the public, and figure out a date for a workshop for the two groups to discuss the ideas and a plan.
