The March 14 issue contained an interesting commentary column by Dr. Lindsay Albanese about honoring women in medicine, and listing several women pioneer doctors.
However, Dr. Mary Walker of Oswego, N.Y., the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, was omitted. She received her medical degree from Syracuse University in 1855, and in 1863, she was hired by the Army as the first woman to serve as a surgeon. In the Civil War, she treated soldiers on the front line, and was captured in 1864. After four months, she was released in a prisoner exchange. The U.S. Mint is releasing the Dr. Mary Walker quarter later this year in connection with its series recognizing outstanding women.
