Woodbridge girls dominate Sussex Central

March 2, 2019

The Blue Raiders girls’ basketball team ran away with a 68-49 victory over Sussex Central  March 1 at Woodbridge.

Cha'Kya Johnson led the Blue Raiders with 28 points. Janeira Scott hit for 15, while Tykeya Nelson scored 11.

“Our main thing is our high pressure defense,” said Woodbridge sophomore point guard Janeira Scott. ”Defense always wins the game. We know we have to play hard defense and we can win.”

“I was a little apprehensive to see how they were going to react after losing (the Henlopen Conference Championship to Cape) their first game of the season,” said Woodbridge head coach Emillo Perry. “Being a young group and that (Henlopen Conference ) was a goal we set.  It didn’t happen for us, but our ultimate goal is to win a state championship. Tonight we wanted to play sound defense and not lose sight of their scorers Brenya Reid and Raeonna Stratton. Some things really fell into place. While we want to play in the rhythm of the game, we got to understand what got us here and that’s playing inside out. I don’t think our big girl Cha'Kya Johnson missed a shot in the first half.”

“They didn’t miss anything early,” said Central coach Ron Dukes. “They were knocking them down. They were coming off the first loss of the year and they had a whole week to think about it. We were wondering how they were going to come out. Well they were ready to play. We were nervous coming into the game tonight. When you have four seniors and they know it’s one and done, you don’t want the one. I think they think about it too much when they should just go play ball.”

Freshman Brenya Reid led the Knights with 15, while senior teammate Raeonna Stratton added 14.

“We had a long break before the playoffs,” said Central senior Raeonna Stratton. “We came out rough in the first half of the Tatnall games and we came out rough in this game and they took the momentum in the first half. They (Woodbridge) had a longer time to get ready for us. (the Raiders had a first round bye) We had one day to get ready for them. But we had a great season.”

“We did have a decent season,” said Dukes. “Congratulations to Woodbridge. It hurts me that we lost, but I graduated from Woodbridge, so I can root for them the rest of the  way.”

The Blue Raiders will play Caravel Monday, March 4, in Dover. Tip off is 6 p.m.
