Worcester Prep approves mask-optional protocol

Face coverings still required on all school transportation
February 23, 2022

The Worcester Preparatory School Task Force approved a mask-optional protocol effective immediately Feb. 15. The task force met to discuss the current metrics related to COVID including case numbers in Worcester County, Md., and surrounding areas. In response to declining positivity rates and the increasing number of fully vaccinated individuals within the school community, Worcester Prep adopted a school-wide mask-optional protocol for faculty, staff and students.

“Based on the WPS positivity trends over the past few weeks, the letter from Gov. Hogan and from the Worcester County councilmen, we believe this was the appropriate time to move to mask optional,” said Dr. John McDonald, head of school. “We will continue to monitor and make adjustments when necessary.”

Faculty, staff and students who test positive for COVID will be required to isolate and quarantine based on guidance provided by the Maryland Department of Health and CDC, and moving forward, contact tracing will be handled exclusively by the local county health departments. All members of the school community should continue to monitor for symptoms of COVID and stay home when feeling sick.

However, per a federal mandate which remains in place, masks will be required on all school transportation, including field trips and sports travel.

The school administration and the task force will continue to monitor COVID numbers and adjust this new protocol when and if needed.
