Worcester Prep athletes honored for success

Worcester Preparatory School boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and golf teams all won Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference championships this fall. Also, 35 student-athletes were named in the 2018 ESIAC All-Conference Team selections, including four Player of the Year awards and two Runner of the Year awards. 

Earning all-conference honors for girls’ soccer are Delaney Abercrombie, Mesa Cammack, Emily Copeland, Alannah Curtis, Gracie Gardner (Player of the Year), Morgan White and Natalie Brushmiller (honorable mention). Gardner won the ESIAC Player of the Year award for girls’ soccer, playing goalie. She was unscored upon in 2018 regular-season play. Gardner is a three-sport scholar-athlete who also is a standout basketball and lacrosse player. She resides in Salisbury, Md., with her parents, Julie and Galen Gardner, and younger siblings, Jack and Ansley.  

For boys’ soccer, all-conference honors went to Graham Hammond, Aiden Mullins, Vincent Petrera (Player of the Year), Cooper Richins, Henry Taboh, Michael Wehberg and Cole Berry (honorable mention). For the second consecutive year, sophomore Petrera won the ESIAC Player of the Year award and was voted MVP by his teammates. This season, he broke the school’s scoring record for most goals (39) and was selected as National Soccer Coaches Association Maryland High School Player of the Week. Petrera is a three-sport scholar-athlete who also plays international, year-round soccer. He resides in Salisbury with his parents, Kathleen and Dr. Pasquale Petrera.

Field hockey players honored include Hailee Arrington (Player of the Year), Virginia Bateman, Rylie Carey, Hana Miller, Abbi Nechay and Maya Natesan (honorable mention). Arrington, a senior, won the ESIAC Player of the Year award and was voted MVP by her field hockey teammates. Arrington is a standout scholar-athlete who has committed to play field hockey at American University next year. She resides in Salisbury with her parents, Suzanne and Dr. Jason Arrington, and younger sibling, John. 

All-conference golfers are Matt Durkin, Jacob Meakin, Colin Miller (Player of the Year) and Devin Wallace (honorable mention). Miller, a senior, won the ESIAC Player of the Year award and was voted MVP by his teammates. He is a standout scholar-athlete who excels in every sport WPS offers and chose to focus on golf, basketball and tennis his senior year. Colin resides in Berlin, Md., with his parents, Randy and Paula Miller.

Earning all-conference honors for volleyball are Julia Godwin, Hailey Merritt and Maddy Warren (honorable mention).

For boys’ cross country, all-conference honors went to Connor Carpenter, Frank Carter, Graham McColgan (Runner of the Year) and Enzo Zechiel. McColgan, a sophomore, won the ESIAC Runner of the Year award and was voted MVP by his teammates. He quickly transitioned from playing soccer to running cross country and has never looked back. He is a competitive three-sport scholar-athlete who also excels in basketball and lacrosse. Graham lives in Millsboro with his parents, John and Noelle McColgan, and older sibling, Quinn.

Girls’ cross country runners honored include Myranda Beebe (Runner of the Year), Ashley Laws, Quinn McColgan and Hannah Merritt. Beebe, a freshman, won the ESIAC Runner of the Year award and was voted MVP by her teammates. Beebe is a three-sport scholar athlete who also excels in basketball and lacrosse. She lives in Rehoboth Beach with her parents, Patrick and Tammy Beebe.
