WRDE Coast TV to support Buddy Walk Oct. 10
Rachel Coleman, star and creator of Nickelodeon’s TV show "Signing Time," will perform at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand Saturday, Oct. 10, following the 9 a.m. Boardwalk Buddy Walk. Her performance is being presented by WRDE Coast TV. Bob Backman, president and general manager of WRDE Coast TV knows what it means to be local. WRDE is Delmarva’s own NBC station.
Backman’s mission, “local, local, local,” is evident not only in his station programming, but in supporting the community. WRDE is providing airtime to promote the 10th anniversary of the Columbus Day weekend event.
The mission of the Boardwalk Buddy Walk is to create a community where people with Down syndrome, or any cognitive disorder, can live, work, play and be valued for the individuals that they are. The event is part of Buddy Fest weekend has been recognized by the National Down Syndrome Society for exceptional community involvement.
The walk has grown to include 100 self-advocates, and over 1,500 participants. Lasting friendships have developed over the years. Following the performance by Coleman, participants are encouraged to visit the shops and eateries downtown.
The Boardwalk Buddy Walk is organized by local volunteers and supported by local businesses and the community in general. Proceeds from the Boardwalk Buddy Walk are used to support local organizations that provide educational, occupational or social opportunities to people with cognitive disorders.
