Young guns dominate Run for the Buds 5K in Dewey

The Run for the Buds 5K in Dewey Beach saw 185 finishers March 22.

The event was a celebration weekend of World Down Syndrome Day, and it included lots of families, slow walkers and a few reluctant runners.

Quade Cummings, 16, a Caesar Rodney wrestler, was the overall winner in 20:44.

“The time is kinda slow to win a race but I’ll take it,” Cummings said. 

Melissa Wiley, 40, a nurse practitioner from Ocean City, Md., was second in 21:06. Charlie Zurakowski, 13, of Milton was third overall in 21:06.

Kevin Kornegay, 48, of Elkton, Md., was male masters winner in 21:13, while Teri Welsh, 58, of Milton was female masters winner in 23:23. 

Young guns running in the race included: Leo Veet, 10, seventh in 22:30, Roman Veet, 12, 18th in 24:37; Hudson Barefoot, 9, 21st in 25:14; and Annie Kilcur, 12, 33rd in 27:18.
