Youth sailor competes in Orange Bowl regatta

March 12, 2022

Local sailor Alden Durrell of Rehoboth Beach, representing both Proteus and Annapolis Yacht Clubs, continued his winter sailing schedule competing in the 2021 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami, Fla. The Orange Bowl, first established in 1945, is a five-day event and the largest International Youth Regatta in the Western Hemisphere. This year, the event brought together more than 700 world-class sailors from more than 20 countries to compete in the 420, Laser and International Optimist Classes.

Durrell competed in the International Optimist Class, which attracted more than 280 Optimist sailors from 16 different countries. Conditions for this year’s event were perfect, including winds averaging 10 to 15 mph, abundant sunshine, warm water and lots of new friends from around the world. Three area sailors, including Alden Durrell and Daniel Anderson, representing both Proteus and Annapolis Yacht Clubs, sailed with Morgan Rosenthal, representing Annapolis Yacht Club, in the Optimist Green Fleet at the event.

Proteus Yacht Club continues its winter sailing program with the 2022 Buccaneer Blast Regatta, hosted by the Mark Sorenson Sailing Center in Key Largo, Fla., and the 2022 USODA Valentine’s Day Regatta hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, Fla.
