‘Becoming Thurgood’ documentary film screening set April 26 at Lewes library

The Lewes Public Library, Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, ACLU of Delaware and Cinema Art Theater will present a free screening of the landmark documentary, “Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect,” at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 26, at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive near Lewes.

This film explores the life and legacy of Thurgood Marshall from his trailblazing legal battles to his historic role as the first Black U.S. Supreme Court justice. Featuring rare archival materials and interviews with leading voices from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the film reveals how Marshall helped America confront its deepest contradictions as well as how his vision for justice continues to shape the country today.

Executive produced by Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson and Maryland Public Television’s Travis Mitchell, the film is produced and directed by Alexis Aggrey, with music by two-time Grammy Award-winning composer Derrick Hodge. Following the screening, Aggrey will join the audience for a discussion and Q&A session.

This collaborative program is part of a series in observation of America250, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America’s Semiquincentennial.
