“The nation’s top nutrition advisory panel has decided to drop its caution about eating cholesterol-laden food, a move that could undo almost 40 years of government warnings about its consumption.”  Washington Post February, 2015

  • Cholesterol is needed for many of the body’s critical cellular functions.
  • Cholesterol comes from 2 sources—our bodies and our diets.
  • The body produces all the cholesterol it needs.
  • Health problems arise from the consumption of dietary cholesterol found only in meat and dairy products.
  • Decades of science have conclusively linked dietary cholesterol to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
  • Cholesterol-laden foods include cheeseburgers, pizza, shrimp, eggs, cheese and all other meat and dairy foods.
  • Plant foods contain no cholesterol.
  • The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (pcrm.org) recommends a plant-based cholesterol-free diet of vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains to prevent our major chronic diseases—heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
  • The concerned public can weigh in on the decision of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory panel by signing the Physicians Committee petition at https://secure2.convio.net/pcrm/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=793
