Here's What's Happening in Coastal Delaware This Weekend

April 7, 2016

Mother Nature has decided to have a little fun with us during these first few weeks of spring, but that doesn’t mean the good times are going to stop. In fact, there are several enjoyable events planned for the next few days right here in coastal Delaware.

But before we get to this weekend’s events, gatherings and otherwise fun happenings throughout the region, we'd like to humbly recognize some of our area farmers and produce suppliers who have been especially hard hit during the unexpectedly cold temperatures that descended on Delmarva over the last few days.

We don’t have a status on every farm, of course, but we did hear with dismay that Bennett Orchard’s entire peach crop for 2016 was wiped out during the freezing temperatures earlier this week. This orchard is always a locals’ favorite during the spring and we’re extremely sorry to hear about this loss.

The following was copied from the Bennett’s Facebook page on Wednesday:

“It's a very sad day here at Bennett Orchards. After 6 hours of 23 degree temperatures, it appears that virtually our entire 2016 peach crop has been destroyed. We'll post more updates in the days to come, but we'd like to thank all of our wonderful customers for their thoughts and prayers on a very difficult night for us. The blueberries appear to have survived unscathed, so we look forward to seeing everyone in June for a bountiful crop.”

The news that the blueberry crops survived the temps is indeed a ray of sunshine on an otherwise dreary day for one of coastal Delaware’s greatest fruit orchards. So, be sure to head to Frankford in June and support this long-standing Delaware family farm during this difficult season.

Now, on to a crop of a different sort that headlines our early spring events this weekend – and that would be the thousands of tulips that will be adorning the town of Lewes over the next few weeks.

But the celebration of tulips in the “First Town in the First State” is just one of several gatherings planned for this second weekend of April in coastal Delaware.
