Here's What's Happening the Weekend of May 20-22 in Coastal Delaware

Okay, we’re all tired of the rain and we understand more showers are possible for the weekend. But we’re going to be optimistic and go ahead with this week’s “Weekender Blog” anyway, as always brought to you by the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty.

But just in case, we’ll throw in one or two “rain or shine” events, should Mother Nature decide to have yet another bad day.

Highlighting the festivities for this weekend, just days before the busy Memorial Day holiday, is some good music, lots of great bargains and a festival honoring everybody’s favorite springtime treat – the strawberry!

And speaking of the strawberry, Sussex County’s farmer’s markets are beginning to open up throughout the area, so keep on the lookout for those. Milton, for example, is having a special “asparagus festival” this weekend, so if you’re an asparagus lover, head on over to the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton on Saturday between 3-6 p.m. to buy as much of it as you want.

You’ll notice in our preview of this week’s happenings that there are many that have the word “festival” in them. That’s because it is indeed the time of year when Southern Delaware’s vibrant festival season begins to really pick up steam.

And we’re here to keep you up to date on everything that's “on tap” at the Delaware beaches.

So, take a few minutes and check out all that’s happening this weekend in coastal Delaware. As a side note, if it does rain, do your homework first and make sure your planned event hasn't been postponed or cancelled.

We’re hoping the weather doesn’t play a part in these, our choices for fun goings on this weekend at or near the Delaware beaches:

Bald Cypress Bluegrass Festival (May 21). Scheduled for Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. in Frankford, this event features five bands and will be headlined by Grammy-nominated musician Courtney Hartman. A fundraiser to benefit Delaware Wild Lands, the Bald Cypress Bluegrass Festival will also feature a selection of food trucks, as well as ice cream from Vanderwende Farm Creamery and local craft beer from Crooked Hammock and Dogfish Head. The festival will be held at the Roman Fisher Farm, located at the edge of the Great Cypress Swamp, or 245558 Cypress Road if you have GPS. Tickets to the event cost $25 for adults and $10 for children between the ages of 5 and 17, and also include a tour of the swamp, the largest contiguous forest on Delmarva.
