March 9, 2016

With the calendar turned to March and the weather turning warmer, it’s time for us to once again preview some upcoming area events.

This week, we focus on St. Patrick’s Day and some of the fun activities planned for the second and third weekends in March. With the traditional Irish-themed holiday falling in the middle of the week this year, some events have been scheduled for the weekend before March 17, and some for the weekend after.

Let’s take a look at what’s on tap for the middle of March here in beautiful coastal Delaware:

Milton Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (March 13). This 9th annual event takes place in the downtown historic district of Milton and not only includes the parade, for which the gathering is most well known, but also drink and food specials and a “Lucky Leprechaun 5K.” The event was conceived and is still organized by Irish Eyes Restaurant and all proceeds go to local charitable efforts. Last year’s parade boasted more than 75 entries and organizers are expecting an even bigger turnout in 2016. For more information, call 302-684-8889 or visit www.miltonstpatricksdayparade.com.

St. Patty’s Day Parade/Boardwalk 5K (March 12). Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in style, just across the state line in neighboring Ocean City, Md. Begin your day with a festival at the 45th Street shopping area, followed by the popular parade beginning at noon. The parade route runs from 58th Street to 45th Street and will feature marching units, floats, local celebrities and more. Visit www.delmarvairish.org for more information. There's also a 5K run planned in coordination with the weekend’s festivities, with proceeds benefitting Diakonia. And don’t forget the post race celebration at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub on 4th Street. For more information on the 5K run, visit www.octrirunning.com or call 443-497-4324.

Saint Patrick’s Day “Toasting the Town” Pub Crawl (March 17). This sixth annual event has quickly become a fun tradition in Milford, with four local businesses, two restaurants and five breweries participating in this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day festivities. The event is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, all throughout the downtown area of Milford. Call 302-839-1180 for more information.
