What Would Greta Do?

Greta Thunberg is on her way to the United States. She has been invited to participate at the UN climate talks in September. Greta is a 16 year old climate activist. She wants you to be one, too.

Greta’s journey began when she was 8, a schoolgirl in Sweden, learning about impending climate collapse. But while everyone around her was talking climate crisis, no one seemed to be making significant changes! So, independently, she read climate reports and studied the science in great depth. This bright, articulate child became anxious and depressed while observing inaction on the climate emergency by adults. She stopped eating and speaking, was diagnosed with Aspergers and selective mutism. When she started to eat again, she chose to avoid all meat and dairy for their connection to climate disruption. She became a Vegan and persuaded her parents to as well. When she started to talk again, it was because she had something important to say.

With her parents’ support, Greta rallied her inner resources to focus on her emerging purpose—peaceful, decisive, unrelenting climate activism! One year ago she skipped school to sit alone in front of the Swedish Parliament with her handmade sign announcing her school strike for the climate. Her plan—to strike every Friday until Parliament took notice, until other children took notice, until the media took notice, until other countries took notice—and they have, by the hundreds, the thousands, the millions!

Today Greta is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean headed to New York City on the carbon-neutral Malizia II sailboat. Greta refuses to fly because aviation has such an enormous carbon footprint. This 2-week ocean voyage is not a luxury trip. There is no cooking, no fridge, no toilet, no heat, no electricity! But there is light—the light that emanates from Greta’s wisdom, courage and determination, the light that inspires young and old around the world, the light that daily illuminates my question—What would Greta do?
