Seal takes a breather in Rehoboth Beach

April 16, 2016

A young seal came ashore in Rehoboth Beach Friday night. Resting in the tidal pool zone above the high tide mark, the seal snoozed in the sunshine Saturday morning while Boardwalk walkers and cyclists, and beachcombers, stopped to take a gander.

A volunteer from MERR (Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation) said a wedding scheduled for 2 pm Saturday has been relocated southward to accommodate the napping pinniped. "He's a wedding crasher."

He said the seal has conjunctivitis in its left eye and some kind of injury on one of its hind fins. "It can get back in the water when it's ready," he said. "We can help if needed but not until NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) officials give the green light."
