Smyrna captures boys' and girls' crowns at conference championships

The Smyrna Eagles captured both the male and female team titles at the Henlopen Conference Track and Field Championships May 14, winning the women’s title 183-132 over second-place Caesar Rodney and the men’s championship at 125.5-118 over Dover and CR.

The Eagles won 14 first-place titles over 36 contested in the boys' and girls' competitions.

Sussex Tech placed third in the women’s competition with 81 points followed by Dover with 80, Cape with 54, Sussex Central with 48, Lake Forest with 45, Polytech with 40, Milford with 31, Indian River with 4 and Seaford with 2 points.

Polytech was in fourth place in the boys' competition with 90 points followed by Lake Forest with 71, Sussex Tech with 53, Sussex Central with 51, Cape with 44, Milford with 14, Laurel with 9 and Woodbridge with 6 points.

Naiya Smith of Sussex Central was the fastest in the girls' meet, winning the 100 meters in 12.5, the 200 meters in 25.3 and the 400 meters in 57.6.

Roxanne Ramirez of Sussex Tech won the 1,600-meter run in 5:16 and the 3,200-meter run in 11:43. Tatyana Jenkins of Sussex Central won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.7.

Cape's top performances in the girls' meet came from Sarah Dziak, fifth in the 1,600, 5:39; Grace Brokaw, fourth in the 3,200 12:59, third in the pole vault, 8-feet; Lekarah Howell, sixth in the 100 hurdles; Chakyriah Wright, sixth in the 300 hurdles, 49.9; Jade Jefferson, third in the high jump, 4-feet-10-inches; Ceyra Middleton, second in the shot put, 34-feet-6; and Andy Brzoska, third in the discus, 109-feet-9-inches.

William Gilmartin was the lone conference champion for Cape, winning the discus with a throw of 161-feet-8-inches. Brandon Nixon of Cape was third in the shot put with a throw of 44-feet-10-inches.

Other point producers for Cape were Rodney Pacheco, fourth in the 400 meters, 52.0; Lance White, fifth in the 800 meters, 2:03; DeAndre Sheppard, fifth in the high jump, 6-feet; and Ryan Head, third in the pole vault, 10-feet-6-inches.

Ben Bamforth of Sussex Tech was second in the 1,600 in 4:35 and fourth in the 3,200 in 10:14. Isaiah Brown of Sussex Tech won the long jump in 22-feet-4-inches.

Sussex Central captured the top two positions in the 400 meters, with Kiante Sturgis, 50.8, and PJ Alexander, 51.1.

The DIAA State Championship meet will be Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, at Dover High School. The season-ending Meet of Champions is set for Wednesday, May 25.
