Carl J. Hartz Jr., former LYC treasurer

Carl J. Hartz Jr., 78, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.  He was born July 27, 1932, in Rochester, N.Y., son of the late Carl J. Hartz Sr. and Margaret (May) Hartz.

Mr. Hartz enjoyed a long career with Delco Products of Rochester, and Consolidated Freight Ways of Henrietta, N.Y. prior to relocating to the beach in 1988 from North Chili, N.Y.  Mr. Hartz’s love of trailer camping and the ocean lured him to the Delaware beaches; he was a former treasurer of the Lewes Yacht Club.  He was a skilled woodworker who produced many cabinets and fine furniture.  He was well known for his great sense of humor and his exemplary leadership.

Mr. Hartz was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Oak Orchard, and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus where he was currently serving as financial officer.   He proudly served as a U.S. Marine and was a past commander of American Legion Post 1830 Chili.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Hartz and one sister.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances “Fran” (Litten) Hartz; three sons: Stephen Hartz (Barbara) of Macedon, N.Y., Carl Hartz III (Penny) of Monroe, Ohio and Erich Hartz (Christine) of Mooresville, N.C.; four daughters: Theresa Pye (Craig) of Dover, Mary Drave (Scott) of Newark, N.Y., Elizabeth McHugh (Bill) of Rochester and Kristen Lippa (Dave) of Rochester; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 28, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Route 24 at Mount Joy Road, Millsboro.  Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where the Knights of Columbus, Father Capodanno Assembly 2413 will provide an honor guard. Interment will be at 1 p.m., Friday, April 29, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Delaware Diabetes Association, 4 Main Sail Drive, Milton, DE 19968.
