The Treasures of the Sea Exhibit at Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus, is celebrating International Museum Day with other museums around the world by offering free admission from noon to 4 p.m., Friday, May 20.
This year’s International Museum Day theme, chosen by the International Council of Museums, is Museums and Memory. Many museums will promote the African continent and its cultural contributions to the world.
The Treasures of the Sea Exhibit’s objects tell the story of the 1622 Spanish shipwrecks of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita and their subsequent find by treasure hunter Mel Fisher. Over $4 million worth of silver and gold, gemstones, jewelry, cannons, and other artifacts from the Atocha are on display at Treasures of the Sea. A video presentation chronicles the discovery and subsequent salvage of the ship.
The Treasures of the Sea Exhibit is open Mondays and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 4 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The regular admission price is $3 for adults, $2.50 for seniors over 65, $1 for students and children under 4 are free.
