Robert (Bob) L. Mader, St. Ann’s parishioner

Robert (Bob) L. Mader, 77, of Bethany Beach, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2016. Bob, as he was known, was born in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Lawrence J. and Inez Hinson Mader. He attended St. Martin's Grade School in Washington and graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Md., in 1957.
Bob started his career as a meat cutter for Safeway Stores. He later became a pipe coverer for Local 24 of the Asbestos Workers in Laurel, Md., retired, and started his own pipe cover business. After his final retirement, he moved to Bethany Beach, and told his sister that these were the happiest days of his life.
After moving to the "ocean" he began his "farming years." He was affectionately known as "Farmer Bob" to the parishioners of St. Ann's Catholic Church. He delighted in distributing his harvest after the 8:30 a.m. weekday Mass.
Bob was a member of the St. Ann's Men's Club and an usher at the 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass.
Bob is survived by his son, Donald Mader of Harwood, Md.; a stepdaughter, Melissa Martinez of Sterling, Va.; a sister, Marie Mader of Alexandria, Va.; and his close friend Rosemarie (Ro) McCubbin of Dagsboro.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield, Parkway, Bethany Beach. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Bob's name to St. Ann Catholic Church at the above address.
