James M. Proudfoot, retired superintendent

James Morgan Proudfoot, 89, of Millsboro died Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Renaissance Rehabilitation Center after a well-fought battle with complications from a stroke.

He was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Grafton, W.Va. to the late Leon and Ruth Boyles Proudfoot.   He graduated from Grafton High School in 1940 and entered into the U.S. army in 1941.  While in the army, he married Miss Helen Marie Bennett.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Fairmont College and his master’s degree from West Virginia University.

After moving to Delaware in 1951, he taught biology and science for 10 years and later went on to be the superintendent of the Indian River School District.  He retired in 1984.  He said he had a wonderful life, liked all his students and parents, and would do the same thing again.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded by his devoted wife of 66 years, Helen Marie Proudfoot.

He is survived by his loving family, James R. Proudfoot of Orange Park, Fla., David and Neva Proudfoot of Millsboro, Robert and Mary Win Proudfoot of Tampa, Fla. and Michael and Kimberly Proudfoot of Millsboro; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 23, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call after 9 a.m.  Friends may also call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 22, at the funeral home.  Pastor Ed Kuhling will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
