First State Community Action holds annual dinner and awards banquet

Governor-elect Congressman John Carney delivers the keynote address. Carney spoke of the divineness in Washington. He said, “We need a Return Day for our country in my view. Burying the hatchet is symbolic but the symbolism is we’re Democrats, we’re Republicans, we’re Libertarians or Green Party, but first and foremost we are Delawareans. The election season is over and it is now time to do the work for the people of our state. And that is the way we do it in our state. Working together.”

The Personal Achievement Award was presented to Chef Charles Webb. After a career as a carpenter Webb attended barber school. This led him into caring for men in a group home, which included cooking for them. He found an ad for a culinary school, at First State Community Action Agency. He completed the school and opened a catering company. Webb was then hired as First State’s Now We’re Cooking classes for area high school students with special needs. The Community Partner Award was presented to Cape Henlopen High School. For 18 years, Cape has been providing after school home work assistance for at risk students. The achievement gap is closing and students have safe place to be. First State Community Action Agency held its Annual Dinner November 21 at Dover Downs. Awards were presented, including community partners, personal achievement and the prestigious Stanford Bratton Award. The keynote address was presented by Goernor-elect Congressman John Carney. A large contingent of state legislators attended the dinner along with First State Community Action Agency board members and other community partners.
