CrossFit Lewes’ Share the Pain nets $35K for domestic violence survivors

Event has generated more than $115,000 over four years
May 30, 2017

The fourth installment of CrossFit Lewes' semiannual Share The Pain fundraiser Saturday, April 29, raised more than $35,000 for domestic violence survivors. The event supports the SAFE Program of People's Place which provides vital services to survivors of domestic violence in Sussex and Kent counties. Much of that support helps women and children in need get a new lease on life.

The event brought the total dollar amount raised over the last three Share the Pains to more than $115,000.

Each time the event has been held, it has grown larger. For Share the Pain 4, CrossFit Lewes invited members of CrossFit Dover and CrossFit 1806 in Smyrna to participate and to help raise funds. Share the Pain is a CrossFit-inspired fitness competition. Most participants competed in three timed fitness events that included body weight exercises (such as burpees and sit-ups), weightlifting and cardio exercises (including running and jumping rope). Additionally, prior to the day of the event, participants raised money on personal web pages to supplement their workout scores. There were seven different competitive divisions with prizes awarded to both first- and second-place athletes.

"We are incredibly grateful for the fundraising efforts of CrossFit Lewes, CrossFit Dover and CrossFit 1806," said Marcey Rezac, program director of SAFE. "The money raised is going to make a significant difference in helping the SAFE Program to be able to provide domestic violence survivors with the support they need to live violence-free, especially during this time in which state funding is being reduced. It is particularly encouraging to see so many people come together and give their time and their money to support these families in their time of need."

"We are excited the efforts of our CrossFit communities have once again resulted in such an outpouring of support for survivors of domestic violence," said Kris Carper, owner of CrossFit Lewes. "This is the fourth time we've held Share the Pain. The strength of our CrossFit community never disappoints."

In addition to the three CrossFit affiliates, the event also had a host of sponsors providing much-needed support to help the event succeed. This year's title sponsor was Atlantic Theaters (Movies at Midway).

"Without the help of our sponsors, Share the Pain would not exist," added Carper.

In addition to Atlantic Theaters, sponsors for Share the Pain 4 from both Sussex and Kent counties included: i.g. Burton, GGC of Delaware, CRx Construction, The Oldfather Group, Bella Terra Landscaping, Karl Wilkerson Communications, Southern Delaware Orthopaedics, The Cape Gazette, The Crooked Hammock, Ken Wilkerson Communications, Dewey Beer Company and McClung-Logan Equipment Company. Also sponsoring the event were El Dorado, Tidewater Landing, Del-One Federal Credit Union, Dover Federal Credit Union, Kent Oil Company, Hurlock Real Estate, Satterfield & Ryan, Community Bank, Mercer-Sydell Dental, Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Logo Motive Custom Apparel.
