Chamber and USO to host Beach Goes Blue - Red & White Too June 10
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce and USO Delaware invite everyone to attend the Beach Goes Blue - Red & White Too! service recognition day Saturday, June 10. All military and first responders will be saluted.
The Military Village by USO Delaware will include military displays, and live music on the Bandstand with performances by the USO Show Troupe and Blue Cat Blues Band.
The event will come to a close with a choreographed, musical light show on the beach. Designated local businesses will offer discounts for service members and first responders with ID - look for the red, white and blue pinwheels.
The John M. Scharp Geck-Go 5K Run/Walk starts at 8 a.m., rain or shine. Kiddie K starts at 7:50 (10 and under free). To register, go to www.trisportsevents.com.
Military personnel, demonstrations and exhibits will fill the horseshoe surrounding the Rehoboth Bandstand from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Kids can get their photos taken on the equipment and check out the Kids' Zone with games, face painting, crafts and a troop care package-making station. Attendees can view displays and interact with local and state first responder agencies including the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, Delaware State Police Scuba Team, Special Operations Rescue Team, various municipal police agencies and more.
Young first responders in training can visit each agency to pick up some good-guy goodies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. State and local police agencies will hold a good guy swearing-in at 2 p.m. on the Bandstand.
The vintage Big Red fire truck and ladder truck will be displayed at the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co. Station 86 at 219 Rehoboth Ave. Attendees can stop into the station museum for a look at the history of firefighting in Rehoboth Beach. Little firefighters in training can pick up their honorary helmets at Station 86 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Three performances by the USO Show Troupe at the Bandstand will be from 1 to 2, 6 to 6:45 and 8:15 to 9 p.m. The Blue Cat Blues Band performs 9:15 to 10 p.m. The choreographed light show on the beach will be from 10 to 10:30 p.m. For more information and a full schedule of events, go to www.beach-fun.com.
Calling all military and first reponders - the library wants to hear service stories
The Rehoboth Beach Public Library is collecting service stories from military and first responders through Saturday, June 17. Stories can be submitted electronically to rehobothbeach.library@lib.de.us or in person at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, 226 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, during regular operating hours. Stories will be compiled into a collection and viewable online at www.rehobothlibrary.org. Photo submissions are welcome and can be scanned at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library if needed.
