Eclectic music comes to Concerts at the Beach Aug. 6

Concerts at the Beach will present a midsummer program of eclectic music ranging from Beethoven to classical jazz to ethnic music.

The concert will be held at 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, in St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in downtown Bethany Beach at Pennsylvania and Maplewood avenues.

Flutist Joseph Cunliffe, violinist Teri Lazar and violist Osman Kivrak will perform Beethoven’s “Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola.” The program will also include music by Astor Piazzolla, an Argentinian tango composer who incorporated jazz and classical music into his work.

The evening will also include pieces written by Osman Kivrak incorporating elements of Turkish folk music and arranged specifically for the group.

Joseph Cunliffe, flutist, composer, educator and distinguished recording artist, is featured on more than 70 recordings of classical, jazz, rock and international music. The Washington-based artist has recorded film music for PBS, National Geographic, BBC and Discovery Channel. He has also performed on radio and TV and in film documentaries. He is a recognized musician in both classical and contemporary styles. He has given performances for Sir James Galway, Oprah Winfrey, Leonard Slatkin, Mstislav Rostropovich and Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper Gore. His concerts have been presented at the Kennedy Center, the Central American Summit Conference and the National Hispanic Heritage Awards. He and another outstanding Washington-based artist, guitarist Giorgia Cavallero, perform as Flutar.

Osman Kivrak, violist and composer, has received many honors including winner of the National Scholarship Competition. He is artistic director of Concerts at the Beach Concert Series and is a member of the National Gallery of Art String Quartet and the Sunrise Quartet. A native of Turkey, he received his bachelor of music degree from Gazi University and completed his master’s and doctoral degrees in music from the Catholic University of America. Kivrak has performed at the Spoleto Festival in the United States and Italy and has toured throughout Europe as a chamber music player. His recordings appear on several labels. His work has been performed at the Kennedy Center, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress as well as across the United States and Turkey. He currently teaches viola and chamber music at American University in Washington where he is musician in residence.

Teri Lazar, violinist, has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. She performs with the National Gallery of Art String Quartet, the Sunrise Quartet and the Virginia Chamber Orchestra, where she is concertmaster. She records on numerous labels and has been heard on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” program. She has been a winner in numerous competitions and was a finalist in several international competitions. Graduating summa cum laude as an undergraduate from Catholic University, Lazar went on to receive her master’s and doctoral degrees in music in violin performance. She is currently on the faculty of American University in Washington where she teaches violin and is musician in residence.
