Quillen spot on about bike improvements

March 16, 2018

I read with interest a letter Ray Quillen previously submitted for the Letters to the Editor column. I'm writing in support of Mr. Quillen's idea of reducing the speed limit on the Freeman Highway, and to install some type of barrier separating the bike lane from car traffic on the canal bridge.

I also frequently bike Freeman, and go over that bridge. When the car traffic is heavy, it can get a bit dicey for cyclists because, as Mr. Quillen states, the bike lane narrows on the bridge. Even an inexpensive barrier such as pvc-type posts installed every eight to 10 feet, along with a reduction in speed limit to 35 mph, would make for a much safer passage over the bridge.

This improvement in cyclist safety should be a high priority as every year more and more people are discovering the "Lewes-Rehoboth loop" they can use by riding both the Junction-Breakwater Trail and the Herring Point to Gordons Pond Trail.
