Georgetown Mayor Bill West joined Jane Hovington at the Juneteenth ceremony, expressing his support for the celebration.

Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, was introduced to the audience by Jane Hovington. Hovington recognized Pettyjohn for honoring Georgetown’s history. Pettyjohn helped get the Richard Allen School transferred from the Indian River School District into the Richard Allen Coalition. He also read the Senate resolution to recognize June 19 as Juneteenth Independence Day in the State of Delaware.

Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, joined Jane Hovington at the mic and talked about the history of Delaware and said, “Celebrating today, I think it is very important to remember the history of where we are, particularly in this location, we see and understand the commitment from the Richard Allen Coalition.”
Juneteenth was celebrated in Georgetown June 16 with a parade and celebration at Richard Allen School. The event was sponsored by the Richard Allen Coalition, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Buffalo Soldiers.
Juneteenth is a celebration of June 19, 1865, when the Union Soldiers entered Galveston, Texas, to announce General’s Order 3, ensuring adherence to Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, issued two years earlier. Juneteenth is a celebration of the day all African-Americans were freed from slavery.
