It’s safe to say that fall is one of our favorite seasons: the temperature is ideal, the trees are bursting with color, football is on, and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes is in the air (#BasicAlert). But when the leaves start to fall, the roads can become more treacherous, especially when it rains.

So, to help you enjoy autumn in its full form, we’ve compiled a few tips on how to stay smart when the roads get leafy:

  1. Never park on top of a large leaf pile. You’ll avoid the chance of a fire from your hot exhaust system.
  2. Reduce your speed and give yourself more distance between the car in front of you. Just like in ice or snow, leaves can cause your wheels to lose traction and slip even after you’ve braked.
  3. Clean your windshield wipers before getting into the car to make sure none are stuck behind the blades. Make sure your windshield is leaf-free in case it starts to rain and you need full visibility through the window.
  4. Be extra cautious of children near the road. Kids are known to play in leaves outside of their homes in the fall, so avoid big piles of leaves and slow your roll in residential areas.

Safety in your neighborhood is important – so be sure to drive carefully. And enjoy all that the season has to offer!
