The Jefferson School breaks ground on new middle school
The Jefferson School in Georgetown broke ground Nov. 30 on a new $3.5 million expansion to its 43-acre campus on Wilson Road.
“This is a big occasion for us at The Jefferson School,” said Head of School Connie Hendricks. “Our county has grown by leaps and bounds and our school enrollment has also grown. We have 10 classrooms, and we are in need of new space.”
The Jefferson School Chairman of the Board Nick Benz said the new building will be open in time for next school year, allowing the school to double in size. He said half the money for the project is already raised.
Hendricks said the new building will not only allow the school to serve more students but will also allow for more community outreach. Besides new classrooms for middle school students, the building will also include a gym, a performing arts center, science lab and an art room with a pottery kiln. The existing school building will be used for pre-kindergarten through elementary school students, with the new building used mainly for seventh and eighth graders. Founded in 1991, The Jefferson School serves 109 students but Benz is hopeful the new building will help the school expand further.
The expansion will also include $1 million in solar power and battery backup systems by Energize Delaware, a state agency that provides loans for clean energy projects.
