Laurel Historical Society to host Dunbar school event Feb. 17

February 10, 2019

The Town of Laurel and the Laurel Historical Society invite all Dunbar alumni, and anyone else, to an Afternoon of Nostalgia at Dunbar School Sunday, Feb. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Paul Laurence Dunbar School served the African-American community in Laurel, for grades 1 through 11, from around 1921 until school integration opened it up to all children in preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

For the past 50 years, generations of children of all backgrounds have passed through the school’s doors, learning to read and write, while making lifelong friends and meaningful memories.

With the completion of the new Laurel Elementary School building, the oldest primary school in Laurel has been decommissioned by the State of Delaware. Paul Laurence Dunbar School closed its doors in June, 2018. In the future, the building will be repurposed as the new home of the Laurel Police Department.

Before this change is made, the Town of Laurel and the Laurel Historical Society invite all Dunbar alumni to an Afternoon of Nostalgia at Dunbar School. All Dunbar alumni, family and friends, teachers and administrators and neighbors are invited to bring photos, yearbooks and other memorabilia. The Dunbar School is at 499 W. 6th St., Laurel. Share memories of this historic building, and help the society accomplish its mission of preserving Laurel’s story.
