Brandywine Valley SPCA accepted 44 dogs from a single home in Dover Feb. 22.
Director Walter Fenstermacher announced the effort at the organization’s grand opening of the Eastern Shore Pet Resort and Animal Rescue Center Feb. 23 on Shingle Point Road in Georgetown.
Marketing Director Linda Torelli said the owner of the dogs had recently died and the family contacted animal welfare to help relocate the canines. All 44 dogs, mostly small, received on-site evaluations before being transported to the SPCA’s facilities in Sussex and New Castle counties. All were found to be in good condition.
Thirty dogs were taken to the Milton facility, while the remaining 14 were taken to New Castle. SPCA officials were contacted by the family, which requested to retain eight of the dogs.
The remaining 36 dogs will be put up for adoption.
