Quilt of Valor presented to Jim Lafferty at Lunch With a Purpose

A Quilt of Valor was presented at the Lunch With a Purpose April 3 at Baywood Clubhouse. The Quilt of Valor, handmade by volunteers at Serendipity Quilt Shop in Dagsboro, was presented to Jim Lafferty, president, Warrior Weekend Project. 

Lunch With a Purpose is a monthly gathering of women that benefits a Sussex County charity. All monies collected stay in Sussex County; all funds collected go directly to the charity. Quilts of Valor is a foundation whose mission is to cover all those service members and veterans touched by war with wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor.

The Warrior Weekend Program, hosted by American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard, brings ambulatory veterans from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Fort Belvoir and their families to various places such as Rehoboth Beach, Baltimore Inner Harbor and Philadelphia for a weekend away from the hospital. 

“We can take 10 vets and their spouses or other family members in our 15-passenger van, donated by the Mumford and Miller Concrete Company in Middletown,” said Lafferty. “They also gave us a trailer we can use for luggage, strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers.”

So far, 470 veterans and families have been taken on 49 Warrior Weekend Program trips. The trips started in 2007. “We don’t go for huge numbers,” said Lafferty. “We want to be small and personal.”
