Blockhouse Pond run/walk tradition continues into 16th year
Three hundred students from all Sussex Consortium satellite locations and 150 staff members quietly descended onto the green grass in George H.P. Smith Park for the annual Blockhouse Pond run/walk in Lewes May 10.
The weather was perfect and the sound system superb as the O’Jays song “Love Train” wafted across a cool, spring breeze. The event was started by teacher Tommy Coveleski 16 years ago. Sussex Consortium Principal Vivian Bush, with tears in her eyes and an unsteady voice said, “I always remember Tommy at this moment. This event always captures the spirit of what he was all about.”
Marcus Carreno and the Knights of Columbus delivered the national anthem; lots of little people had hands on hearts.
The Knights of Columbus and Dewey Beach Lions Club donate money to the event. Student Carrie Reed designed the T-shirt and signed several on request. Great Impressions prints the T-shirts, and according to teacher/event organizer Patrick Zemuda, “The City of Lewes lets us use the park. Great Impressions does our shirts. Seashore Striders donates their equipment. A-1 Sanitation, Executive Lawns, Tech Gas, Super G Outlet Liquors and Casapulla’s all help sponsor with donations.”
The pond walk will move to the new Consortium building on Sweetbriar Road, and a pond and walkway will be built to keep the tradition going that the late Tommy Coveleski started 16 years ago.
