Salvation Army celebrates National Donut Day
Held annually on first Friday in June, honors World War I “donut lassies”
June 8, 2019
Salvation Army volunteers spent the morning of June 7 handing out free donuts and water on the Boardwalk in Rehoboth in honor of National Donut Day.
Volunteer Vicki DeSantis said they hand out water on the Boardwalk because people are working out and not everybody wants to eat donuts. The Salvation Army also had donut stands in Dover and Wilmington.
According to the Salvation Army website, the first National Donut Day was celebrated in 1938 by The Salvation Army in Chicago. Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
