Melvinia ‘Mel’ Odessa Lewis-Horsey, enjoyed her family

Melvinia “Mel” Odessa Lewis-Horsey went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 2, 2019, with her family by her side.  Mel was born July 22, 1964, in Norfolk, Va., to Lillie Mae Lewis and the late James Lewis.  

Mel enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, watching old westerns and sitcoms, listening to old school music, dancing, talking noise, and trips to Ocean City’s beach.  Time spent with her friends and family meant the world to her.  Her favorite saying, without a shadow of a doubt, was “Don’t let that worry you.” 

In addition to her father, James Lewis, she was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James and Gracie Lewis; maternal grandparents, John and Evelynn Thomas; and a special uncle, John “Johnny Boy” Thomas.

Melvinia leaves to cherish her loving memories, her husband, Donald Horsey of Ellendale; her mother, Lillie Mae Lewis of Harrington; four sons, Jesse Lewis of Georgetown, Michael Lewis and Quentin Lewis, both of Dover, and Dontre (Sarah) Horsey of Milford; two daughters, Latisha Lewis and Sarina Lewis, both of Dover; three sisters, Lillie Mae (Romayne) Jackson and Denise (Johnny) Bowman, both of Harrington, and Tonya Thomas of Wilmington; one brother, James (Bernice) Lewis of Lewes; 14 grandchildren, Latrell Lewis, Bill Hazzard, LaVonte’ Hazzard, LaVont Hazzard, Sanaa Lewis, Shan’Tae Lewis, Damiere Lewis, Ki’errah Lewis, Kaleese Lewis, D’Zire Smith, Zuri Lewis, Zayn Lewis, Quenshaya Lewis, and Dashina Lewis; three special nephews, Tyree, Jay and O’Jay; one special cousin, John Hazzard; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is also survived by two goddaughters, Jazz Moss and Andrea Riley; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald Sr. and Amanda Horsey of Seaford; three sisters-in-law, Sherite Horsey, Melissa Horsey and Danielle Horsey, all of Seaford; two brothers-in-law, James Gumby and Wendell Gumby, both of Seaford.

Celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday, June 15, in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, at 11 a.m.  A time of visitation will begin at 10 a.m.   Interment will be held Monday, June 17, at Centerville A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 1116 Fentress Road, Chesapeake, Va., at noon.
