Readers’ Choice votes Gallery 37 Best Gallery Downstate

June 22, 2019

Gallery 37 in Milford received the 2019 Best of Delaware Best Gallery Downstate Readers’ Choice Award.

Artist and gallery owner Marcia Reed said, “Original art is a way of enriching our lives. Art and painting are just another way of communicating. It doesn’t have to be in words but with expression. It uplifts our spirits and can evoke an emotion, a memory, an experience, a mood.” This sentiment, is one borne of many years being a teacher, artist and inspiring mentor to other up and coming artists.

Reed relocated to Delaware about seven years ago, once the first chapter of her career ended at the Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts. For many years she led and continues to teach international painting workshops in the Caribbean, Sicily, France, and Turkey, among other places.

Looking for new places to relocate, Reed and her husband-to-be, David Pickrell, found Milford to be the ideal town for them to grow new roots in. They established a high-end gallery that now showcases beautiful art and artisan crafts by close to 60 artists from around the country, but most especially by Delaware artists.

Pickrell designs contemporary welded steel side, coffee or parsons’ tables with either plate glass or aged wood from boardwalks and tobacco barns. He can do custom orders as well.

Gallery 37 is a member of Downtown Milford Inc. Supporting the community is a high priority for this creative couple. Reed and Pickrell  are heavily involved with Third Thursdays of every month, as business owners bring in music, art openings, and food trucks for visitors and town people to enjoy. They are also members of the Milford in Bloom committee to fundraise for flowers all over downtown bridges and lampposts.Reed participated in the DMI Sail Banner Project to enhance the River Walk with art banners. This was an idea the design committee had to bring art into the community all along the Mispillion River. This project also included art by elementary school children.

Their biggest contribution to the cultural community last year was when Gallery 37 was the gold sponsor for the inaugural Ladybug Music Festival - the largest celebration of Women in Music. About 3,500 attendees came to enjoy music by the river, and 40 bands and musicians performed all genres of music.

Reed welcomes book clubs, photography clubs, women’s organizations, garden clubs and writing groups that would like her to speak about the gallery and the artists represented at Gallery 37.

Gallery 37 is at 8 S. Walnut Street in Milford. For more information, call 302-265-2318.
