Missionaries take on home improvement in Ellendale

Catholic Heart Workcamp assists with painting, yardwork, repairs
July 8, 2019

Young missionaries from New Jersey and Pennsylvania came together June 25-26 to help an Ellendale man repair and paint his home.

Jerry Guyer has a disability and is on a limited income, so home maintenance tasks are difficult.  That’s where the Catholic Heart Workcamp comes in, a five-day outing when young people who have not had a opportunity to experience mission work get exactly that.

The first day of work prep went extremely well, Guyer said. On the second day, they finished the painting and yard work, and recaulked the bathroom. Guyer said this is the fourth year campers have arrived to help, and every year they do an amazing job. While they helped Guyer for two days, the camp lasts five days.

“They give a week of their summer up every year to help people who are in need who can’t do stuff on their own, like painting, yard work, power washing and other stuff. But they’re just a tremendous bunch that give their time,” Guyer said. The paint and tools, he said, are donated every year because he cannot afford the materials himself.

Sponsors of the camp are Preston Automotive Group, Southern Delaware Communities, Cedarfield Ruritan Club and Brian McKinley, Guyer said.

Mike Treece chaperoned the young people during the camp. This is his first year with Catholic Heart Workcamp, and when he heard they were in need of chaperones for the many kids participating, he said, he and his wife quickly jumped on the opportunity to be involved.

“The fellowship with Jerry and the residents that we’ve gotten to help. Just being able to take the talents we have … it’s very limited what we know how to do as far as working on things, but we do have abilities, and we can share those with anybody in the community that needs our help,” Treece said.

Patrick McKeever, one of the missionaries, said his favorite part of camp were the fun times helping people out and then going back to the campsite where they have even more fun with the camp counselors.
