Athletes of the Week July 5
Alivia Heers
A rising seventh-grade honor roll student at Beacon Middle School, this catcher is half of the dynamic duo with Lily Hutt on the Lewes/Rehoboth Major League All-Stars. She was behind the plate every inning played in the District 3 tournament. She was also a superhero at the plate batting .545, with two doubles and two home runs in the tournament. "Alivia is very coachable," said Lewes/Rehoboth manager Dave Hutt. "She put in 23 innings behind the plate this week with full gear in the heat. That's a lot. She's also incredibly solid at the plate, hitting two out of the park against Georgetown and Lower Sussex." Alivia is also a member of the Delaware Vipers travel team, which won the 12-and-under state championship this spring. When not playing softball, Alivia likes hanging out at the pool or beach.
Lily Hutt
The pitcher of Lewes/Rehoboth’s dynamic duo, Lily is a rising eighth-grade honor roll student at Sussex Academy Middle School. She pitched four games in the District 3 tournament, going 23 innings, giving up just six earned runs and nine hits while striking out 35 batters. She pitched a no-hitter against Georgetown, throwing five innings in the circle with 11 strikeouts. Lily is also solid at the plate, helping herself by hitting .500 for the tournament with two triples and two doubles. "Lily is very coachable and takes direction well," said father/coach Dave Hutt. She was also a member of the Delaware Vipers state championship team, where she played shortstop. When not on the softball field, she plays basketball and hangs out with her friends at the beach.
Devin Miller
Devin graduated from Cape four years ago as a rangy two-way lineman who was dubbed a “great kid” by his coaches, a technician who seemed more suited for offense than defense. He went to Wesley, a top-shelf Division III program, where starting spots are not easily earned. Devin, 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, was a two-year starter at tackle for the Wolverines, making his first start at Delaware Valley in August 2017. The quietly reserved young man was off the hook as a fan during the Cape boys’ lacrosse spring drive to a state title, supporting his alma mater and longtime boyhood friend Brody McMahon, a 6-foot-6 long pole and also a “great kid.” Devin will graduate this fall and is destined for great things. He is the son of Alphonso Miller and Sharon Lemaire.
Jarret Wilkins
A rising sophomore at Sussex Central High School, this hard-nosed catcher put together a great final game in the District 3 Senior League Championship behind the plate and beside the plate. He went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run for the 3 champs. "Jarret was solid in the District 3 tournament," said Georgetown/Cape manager Steve Mariner. "He played great defense behind the plate and had a great pitching performance in the first championship game matchup to get us here. He pretty much shut Nanticoke/Laurel down. He also called a great game in the final, mixing up the pitches, and Jackson [Mariner] gave up two hits all night with Jarret calling the game." When not playing baseball, Jarret is a member of the Golden Knights FFA.
