Great Decisions discussion series returns to Rehoboth library

July 9, 2019

The Rehoboth Beach Public Library began hosting a discussion series July 8 on foreign policy and global politics called Great Decisions; it will continue every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Begun by the Foreign Policy Association in 1954, the Great Decisions program is designed to encourage debate and discussion of the important global issues of modern times. The program format is intended to bring people together to express their ideas and opinions, learn from others and promote thoughtful discourse. While participants can choose which weeks they come, attending all the classes will provide a more enriching experience.

Each week, attendees will have an assigned reading from a course textbook they can check out from the library. They will also watch a short documentary produced by Great Decisions for PBS before diving into lively and thoughtful debate on a range of topics. These will include refugees and global migration, cyber conflicts, the rising of populism in Europe, and the United States’ relationship with Mexico.

The classes are moderated by Dr. Akwasi P. Osei and Dr. Samuel B. Hoff, who are both tenured professors in the College of Humanities, Education and Social Services at Delaware State University in Dover. Osei has taught at DSU since 1993, boasting an impressive background that includes a PhD from Howard University and a Ford Foundation Fellowship in African Studies. Osei is currently a reviewer for African Studies Review and an editor of Society and Politics in Africa.

Hoff has taught at DSU since 1989, serving as the director of its Law Studies program since 2005. He is the recipient of several national fellowships in the area of foreign, military, and national security policy, including one from the University of Virginia. A nationally known expert on the American presidency, Hoff is also widely published as an opinion column writer.
