Watermelon Queens quench thirst on hot day at the beach
Watermelon Queens from across the country handed out free slices of the locally produced fruit at the Rehoboth Boardwalk July 31. Walkers, joggers, beachgoers and bench sitters enjoyed the fruit on a sunny 90-degree day.
The annual event is a collaboration between the Mar-Del Watermelon Association and the Delaware Department of Agriculture. Queens from Illiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Mar-Del, along with Katie Honeycutt, the National Watermelon Queen, greeted visitors with watermelon, stickers and recipe cards.
