Schools closed through end of academic year

April 24, 2020

Gov. John Carney announced April 24 that all Delaware schools will be closed through the end of the academic year.

“We expect schools and teachers will finish out the last two months as they have been with remote learning and get as much instructional time with their students as possible,” Carney said. “There’s obviously no replacement for in-person instruction in classrooms in terms of the relationships and the services.”

Carney said superintendents to start planning for summer learning and and summer food distribution and begin preparations for next school year.

Carney is encouraging school districts to celebrate seniors as they graduate to give them recognition.

In an April 24 statement to families, Cape Henlopen School District Superintendent Bob Fulton said students will continue to engage in remote learning through the remainder of the school year.

“Yesterday, all families were provided updated guidance regarding our remote learning efforts and expectations,” Fulton stated. “Those documents are also available on our website, capehenlopenschools.com/virtual. If you have any questions regarding our remote learning efforts and/or expectations, please reach out to your child’s teacher and/or principal.”

Fulton said based on the revised 2019-20 district calendar, the last day of remote learning for Pre-K through 11th grade students will be Friday, June 12, and the last remote learning day for seniors will be Monday, June 8.

“On June 9 we will have a virtual commencement ceremony for our graduating seniors,” Fulton stated. “We have been, and will continue to discuss and plan the various details related to our commencement ceremony and other programs related to graduation.  We will be sharing this plan with our seniors and their families prior to May 8. While we are saddened by this news as we miss our students, we know the health of our students, staff and community is most important.”
