As I write this on Nov. 14, 11 days after the election, we are watching a president who is obviously refusing to govern. Trump famously stated repeatedly at his numerous rallies that we would not hear anything about COVID-19 after Nov. 3. The fact is that, other than the news surrounding Trump’s Quixotic refusal to recognize the inevitability of his defeat, requiring everyone to be in suspense while the five key states count down, he is ignoring the pandemic, which today reveals the worst numbers of new cases and deaths. The vast majority of the states are showing record new cases.
What has Vice President Pence, the supposed head of the White House COVID-19 Task Force, decided to do during this crisis? He’s going on vacation! He’s also likely updating his resume since he’ll be looking for work soon.
Clearly, neither Trump nor Pence want to deal with the most catastrophic health crisis in more than a century. They’d rather deal with the delusion that Trump can somehow overcome the insurmountable deficit and “steal” this election.
I, therefore, have a modest proposal: We all know that Trump will inevitably pardon everyone who aided and abetted his numerous illegal actions, including himself. We will not be surprised if he also resigns to allow his VP Pence to also pardon him. Why wait until just before the inauguration to do this? Do it now, with them both resigning, one after the other, and let President-elect Biden and Vice President Harris actually govern and take charge of the recovery that Trump and Pence have so assiduously refused to deal with.
Regrettably, I have no anticipation that they will do this noble thing. That is because Trump is angry and contemptuous of the majority of Americans who rejected him.
He will, therefore, do nothing to benefit the American people, and, like another well-known dictator from the last century, wait until the last minute in his bunker, though all was lost, heedless of the cost to his people, before bailing out.
