Cape High to hold prom, live graduation events

Senior/Junior Prom set for May 23, graduation is June 8
April 23, 2021

Cape High students and families will enjoy the school’s first prom and live graduation ceremonies since 2019.

The Senior/Junior Prom is set for Sunday, May 23, at the Clubhouse at Baywood, using the ballroom and a large tent in the garden area for social distancing and to allow as many students as possible to attend, Principal Nikki Miller said.

Miller said Lisa Kammerer of SoDel Concepts, which operates the Clubhouse at Baywood, contacted her in the fall to put a date on the books in case a spring prom was possible.

“Since this is a very busy season for Baywood and they are being incredibly generous to us, utilizing their facility on a Sunday made the most sense so they could still have previously planned events,” Miller said.

And there will be dancing, Miller said.

“Utilizing the guidelines in Baywood’s COVID plan and our own, we will allow dancing,” Miller said. “Of course, we will need our students socially distanced, and they will wear their mask at all times.”

Festivities begin at 2 p.m., with the promenade set for 2:30 p.m. Families will not be permitted to watch the promenade in person as in years past, Miller said, but a link to a YouTube livestream will be available at capehenlopenschools.com, on Schoology and on district social media accounts.

Seniors get the first opportunity to purchase tickets, set for $15 a person, on Monday, May 3 via the PayPams app. Ticket sales will be extended to juniors from May 4 to 7.

Two outdoor graduation events will take place Tuesday, June 8. The ceremony for students having last names beginning with A-K will start at 4 p.m., and for students with last names beginning L-Z, the ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m.

“Although we would love to have one graduation with all of our graduates together, we recognize the importance of maximizing the number of guests for each graduate,” Miller said. “As we know, the culmination of graduation is something an entire family shares with the student. We are so excited to get to share in person with the class of 2021 their accomplishments and we look forward to watching them cross the stage on graduation day!”

Each senior gets five guest tickets, and only ticket holders and graduating students will be allowed in the stadium and on school property, Miller said. Details on entering and exiting campus, parking and seating will be provided closer to the date, she said.

Both events will be livestreamed and recorded, Miller said, and will also be available at capehenlopenschools.com, on Schoology and on district social media accounts. In case of rain, the events will be held at the same times on Wednesday, June 9. There will be no guest speaker this year, she said.
