Red Hat pirates chapter invades ferry terminal

The Pirates of the Delaware Bay, a Red Hat Society chapter located in Lewes, has again invaded the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal in Lewes.

The chapter is active in the local area until November, when members retire for the winter.

The Red Hat Society is a woman’s social group whose members wear purple outfits and red hats. Normally no men are permitted, but in this chapter the men are invited as guests, and all must also wear pirate attire.

The Pirates of the Delaware Bay chapter was founded on Talk Like a Pirate Day, Sept. 19, 2013. Adventures planned for this year will include attending the Lewes Historical Society maritime tour, a Cape Water Taxi tour, a Lewes Base Ball Club game and LHS Tavern Talks, among others.

The pirates have been in seclusion during the pandemic, and all are eager to get together again with precautions in place. Most of the RHS members did not meet or held remote Zoom meetings during the pandemic. The general feeling among members is it is better to be safe than sorry, and the majority have had both vaccines and have complied with state instructions.

Today, over 20,000 chapters of the Red Hat Society are inspiring women to age playfully in all 50 states and 30 countries around the world. The Red Hat Society is an international society of women that connects, supports and encourages women in their pursuit of fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness while supporting members in the quest to get the most out of life.
