Renowned astronomer James Mullaney to speak Jan. 28 in Lewes

January 19, 2012

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Seekers, Spiritual Treasures at St. Peter’s Square, invite the public to hear renowned astronomer James Mullaney’s presentation, “The Astronomy of 2012: Fact vs. Fiction” from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 28, in the parish hall at 211 Mulberry St., Lewes.

According to Mullaney, “With so much hype and misinformation concerning the year 2012 in the media and being promoted at various conferences, 'The Astronomy of 2012: Fact vs. Fiction' presentation is designed to bring some science and common sense to this sensational subject."

Among the topics covered are the galactic alignment, the Milky Way's Great Dark Rift, the rare 2012 transit of Venus across the Sun, humans' destiny as children of the stars, and a visual journey through the universe using the latest Hubble Space Telescope images.

A celebrated astronomy writer, lecturer and consultant, Mullaney has published more than 700 articles and eight books on observing the wonders of the heavens. He has logged over 20,000 hours of stargazing time with the unaided eye, binoculars and telescopes.

Formerly curator of the Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science in Pittsburgh, Pa., and director of the DuPont Planetarium, he served as staff astronomer at the University of Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Observatory and as an editor for Sky & Telescope magazine.

A contributor to Carl Sagan’s award-winning "Cosmos" PBS Television series, his 50-year mission as a celestial evangelist has been to celebrate the universe, to urge others to look up at the majesty of the heavens and think about who created it all and who keeps it all going. It’s estimated that more than a million people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds have heard his inspiring message. In February 2005, Mullaney was elected a Fellow of the  Royal Astronomical Society of London.

This event is free of charge. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is at Second and Market streets in downtown Lewes.  Seekers is in the parish hall. For more information, call Seekers at 302-645-9916 or go to www.seekerslewes.com.
