The 2021 Cape softball squad held their end-of-season banquet June 29 at Irish Eyes in Lewes. Team awards and kudos were given by the coaches to all players in attendance.
Recent grad Marissa Frederick garnered the team’s Most Valuable Player Award. She pitched a perfect game and had two no-hitters this season, and struck out more than 200 batters.
The Spirit Award went to junior Dru Buehler. The Sportsmanship Award was presented to Texas transfer Sophia Tighe. The Rising Star Award was garnered by Katie Kuhlman, while the first Bill Cordrey Award was presented to Jay’Lyn Slater.
Cape finished the 2021 campaign at 10-9 and was the 17th seed in the DIAA state tournament.




Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
