Free virtual workshop to explore Delaware’s Historic Architecture July 27

Preservation Delaware will present a free virtual workshop at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, with presenter David Ames exploring Delaware’s Historic Architecture: More than Meets the Eye.

David Ames, PhD, is professor emeritus of Public Policy, Administration, and Geography and Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware. He is also co-author of “Design and Historic Preservation: The Challenge of Compatibility.”

His expertise includes urban affairs, public policy, geography, and material culture studies when he was a professor at the University of Delaware from 1979 to 2016. He was associate professor of Urban Studies and Planning at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1971 to 1979. He was affiliated faculty at the University Transportation Center and the Center for Material Culture Studies from 2005 to 2015.

He was co-director of the master’s program in historic preservation at the University of Delaware from 2011 to 2014, director of the Center for Historic Architecture and Design at the University of Delaware from 1984 to 2014, and dean of the College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Delaware from 1979 to 1991.

Ames was honored with the James Martson Fitch Preservation Education Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council on Preservation Education, and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Delaware Chapter of the American Planning Association.

In addition, his interests include historic covered bridges; documenting, evaluating and interpreting historic properties; reconstructing the historic built environment; planning; housing; environmental education; qualitative research; and architectural photography.
