Lois Marie Hitchens, retired travel agent

September 14, 2021

Lois Marie Hitchens, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at her home.  She was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Wilmington, the daughter of Anthony and Carmela (Millie) Caruso.

Lois worked as a travel agent for over 40 years before retiring. She had many loyal customers, and often worked with multiple generations of the same family.

Lois’ greatest joy was being surrounded by her family. In recent years, she was thankful for being able to experience the birth of her great-grandchildren and watching them grow. Earlier this year, she celebrated the 100th anniversary of her “Daddy” immigrating to this country from Italy. Her happiest moment came when she was able to teach a whole new generation the chicken dance.

In addition to her parents, Lois was predeceased by her brother Anthony and her beloved son-in-law James McDowell.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Donald Hitchens; daughter Carol McDowell, son Jeff Berryman and daughter-in-law Helen; sisters, Jean Martinez and Phyllis Mills; grandchildren, Katie Bryant (David), Becky McDowell (Brian), Erin Stitik (Hunter), Tony Berryman, Charlotte Jones, and Alexander Jones; great-grandchildren, Raegan, Tyler, Ethan, Lizzie, Josiah, and Casey; Don’s daughters, Debbie Francisco, Diane Stephens, and their families.

Burial will be private. Arrangements in the care of Short Funeral Services, Georgetown.
