January 26, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Mariner Middle students Laniel Joynes and Morgan Bellamy Hicks for their demonstration of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.

During Laniel’s time at Mariner, he has shown tremendous growth in academics and maturity, teachers said. He is very conscientious about assignments, and he is respectful toward classmates and teachers. He consistently tries his best to exceed expectations.

Day in and day out, Morgan can be counted on to lead by example for her peers. Not only does she put her best foot forward no matter what she faces, but also, she does it with a positive demeanor. Due to her uplifting attitude and determination, teachers say she has set herself up for future success.

Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the youth version of the book “Just Mercy,” by Cape High grad Bryan Stevenson, a civil rights attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative organization.

SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students in the Cape district who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools. A nonpartisan organization, SDARJ educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information, go to
