Beacon Middle AVID students hold paint night fundraiser

January 26, 2022

Beacon Middle School AVID students along with their friends and families participated in the first AVID paint night, held Jan. 14, to raise money for the AVID student funds at Beacon.

“This event was a unique way to bring our AVID students, their families and their friends together for a fun experience outside of the normal school day,” said Nicole Hughes, AVID teacher at Beacon. “Our building art teacher, Mr. Alex Louvis, served as a guest artist, providing a brief lesson to attendees before the painting got started.”

The art lesson highlighted imaginative landscape art as well as the work of Austrian artist and designer Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who had a passion for spirals and arabesque lines. As the evening progressed, canvases were covered with curving lines, a variety of shapes and bright colors.

“Outside of the art component, the paint night also served as a unique way to spend time together,” said Hughes. “The room was filled with laughter and chatter one moment, and silence the next while the painters were deep in concentration.”

The most important takeaway was the sense of community the evening provided for the AVID students and their guests.

“It’s my hope to continue to do paint night fundraisers, and even potentially expand the program to students outside of the AVID program,” said Hughes.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program whose mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in the global society. It’s offered as an option to students in grades 6-12 at Beacon Middle School, Mariner Middle School and Cape Henlopen High School.

The program helps prepare students for continuing education after high school and has a proven track record for bringing out the best in students by helping them realize their goals. Often, AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college.
